El Nino Watch
Satellite estimate of rain intensity (NASA GPM IMERG). Shows where it is raining hard, even over the ocean where there are no rain gauges.
Map layers
IMERG merges microwave and infrared data from a constellation of satellites, calibrated with rain gauges, into a global rain map. It is an estimate: it can miss short, small showers and can be off over mountains and small islands.
Colours show rain rate (see the legend): light colours = light rain, bright/dark colours = heavy rain. Empty = no rain detected.
During El Nino, heavy rain shifts to the central Pacific and Southeast Asia gets less. In the northeast monsoon, look for rain bands over the southern Gulf of Thailand.
